Course Reflection

Reflection.

During this semester, we did many projects and presentation, I learned about movies, music, culture, my own identity, culture shock, and many other topic, that were really interesting in this semester.

I like the way the professor explained all of them because she did many activities and they all were didactic and the one that really caught my eyes was the Poster that we did in unit #3. It was really interesting activity because the professor gave us a paper and we needed to keep going with the story and try to make a poster with it.

I really understood the real meaning of Pop Culture during this semester.I am really happy to being in this class because I understood many topic in general and I also believe that this is an interesting and important class because we sometimes listen music or watch movies and we do not pay that much attention about those things. However, I learned different types of genres and different types of music, specially from different country.
Another activity that I also found really interesting the Pinboard activity because I learned and listened music from different cultures.

Pop Culture App

My pop culture app is Spotify because it is an international media service, where you can listen music. I love this app because you can find new music and new singers.

This is an interesting app because you can also go to the 50 top songs over the world and It will show you all of them with their singers. You can also find music from different cultures.

Summary of one new text

Juice Wrld Dead At 21 After Suffering Seizure

• The talented young rapper and singer whose career was just taking off, is dead after suffering a seizure in Chicago's Midway airport.

• Witnesses say that he suffered the seizure while walking through the airport, Law enforcement sources say he was bleeding from the mouth when paramedics got on scene.

• The rapper was still conscious when he was transported by Chicago fire. However,  he was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

•  There is not clear cause of death at this time.

I chose this news because It was something that really catch my eyes today in the morning. In addition, his career was just starting  after he almost climbed to the top of the  charts in 2018.

This news was everywhere on december 8th. there are many articles online and a lot of news paper already have the new.

Special Event

Black Friday

I went to Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont. I went at 10:00 A.m and there were many people. I saw a lot of lines, some of them went around of the store. People were doing those lines for almost 45 minutes and an hour.  There were a lot of sales in every store. a lot of brand such as Gucci and Michael Kors were really busy. In Addition, there were a lot of people with suitcases, which is really good idea because you can put all your purchase there.

People are waking up early and spending a lot of money in this day.

I chose this event because I believed this an important holiday in the U.S.A and it is also a notable day. However, people are forgetting the meaning of this day because of the consumerism. I think this is an interesting event and a lot of people participate in this event.

My personal experience was amazing because I had never seem that mall as crowded as that day. In Addition, I love the fact that a lot of people were there. I felt delight and exited because everyone was running and people weren't even trying the clothes, they were just taking and paying the clothes.

Everything was totally amazing and I am so happy to participate there.

Summary of Blues/Rap

A cruel Journey(1500-1800)

• Africa has a lot of music styles and the music was powerful in their life.
• The blues' story begins with Africans, who were brought to The U.S.A.

II Slavery in America(1600s-1865)

• It was really hard for Africans to show their feelings.
• Enslaved Africans could not speak to another one while working.
• Africans passed their cultural and musical practices from one generation to another though the oral tradition.

III Freedom and the Post-Civil war period(1865-1900)

• Freedom did not bring  full equality, there was still discrimination against African people.
• It was rhythmic,highly participatory, and improvisational and also incorporated call-and-response singing.

IV The Blues Take from: Country Blues + Classic Blues(1900-1930)

• African Americans experienced more freedom to travel, more control over their family, personal lives and greater freedom to create and perform music.
• When the Blues started, it was called country.
• There was another style of Blues, which was called Classic Blues.

V Spreading the Blues: The Great Migration(1910-1960)

• While Blues music was taking in the 1900s, times remained hard for African Americans in the south.
• African Americans began migrating to North.

VI in the City: Urban Blues and Rhythm and Blues(1940s-1960s)

• The Urban sound that was developed in Chicago by blues musicians.
• During the late 1940s and 1950s  that the musical community dropped the term "race records".

VII Inspired by the Blues: Soul, Funk and Rap(1960s -1970s)

• There was a period of social turmoil and protest in The U.S.A.
• The music emerged from African American culture, which was called soul music.
• By the late 60s,the political climate in the U.S.A had changed and for many the optimism of the 1960s was finding.

VIII Continuing the Blues Journey

• When the hip hop and rap expanded into American culture, R&B and Soul were still going strong.
• Contemporary artist found a way to add more traditional blues influences into their work 
• Blues Tradition remains alive and well.

Unit Reflection#4

Unit Reflection #4

This unit was about music, where we learned more about the 40-top music around the world such as Someone You Loved from Lewis Capaldi and Truth Hurts from Lizzo. We did genre presentations, where I explained a genre called 60s British Invasion and I learned other new genres such as 60s Urban folk and Glam Rock. The professor gave us four texts the first one is called same old song, where I learned how the music is changing with the generation and that the new music is designed to bother older people. The second text is called Pop music the same, where I learned that people who listen to Pop radio know that the sound is really similar, they found that music is really popular and universal around the world and I also learned that music sells more when people feel identified with it. The third one is called IHOB: blues text, where I learned about a cruel journey (1500-1800) ,slavery in America (1600s-1865),freedom and the Post-Civil war period(1865-1900), the blues take form country blues+classic blues (1900-1930), the great migration (1910-1960), urban Blues and Rhythm and Blues (1940s-1960), soul, funk and rap (1960s-1970) and continuing the Blues Journey. The last one is called History of Rap, where I learned that rap’s a delivery style that have rhyme, rhythm and spoken language and Rap consists of content, flow and delivery. During this unit we also did a pinboard, which was really interesting because I learned new genres from different cultures. The professor also gave us a list of terms music, where I did my own terms and it was really good because I fell as if I learned more by doing my own list.

My Aha moment was when the Professor gave us the pinboard and she said “we needed to add some songs related to the questions” it was really fun because I had used Pinterest before and when she said that, I was really happy. It was an interesting activity.

I did not know that all pop music sounds exactly the same, and I listened some pop songs, and it is totally true. Moreover, it was really interesting to learn that pop music has a lot of money earning across all music genres because I did not know that pop music was that much important around the world.

A song moved me

This Song is called Sober from Demi Lovato.

This song left such a strong impression on me because I like this singer a lot and she has been on drugs since she started her career as a singer. However, she has been a lot of rehabilitation centers but when she putted this song out, I was really disappointed because she had been sober for more than three years after. I was really sad because I did not expect that from her again. However, I totally understand that being a singer is not something easy, but I expected from her.

This song touched me a lot because she is saying that she is really sorry for coming back on drugs and she apologized to her family and her fans, which I think it is something really nice. I. also love the fact that she accepted that she is on drugs because it is hard for a singer to accept, when they are on drugs.

Moreover, I believe it is not an excuse as she said in her lyrics because she is the only hurting herself.
